Many people assume that when they book a rental car from the airport, the price they initially see already includes airport service and pick-up fees. In reality, this is not always the case.
Some rent-a-car companies charge an additional “airport/location fee” for pick-up at Sofia Airport, which is added later during the booking process.
Sometimes this fee is fixed, but in other cases it is charged per day and varies depending on the season, rental period, and vehicle class. In certain situations, these fees can reach between €15 and €50 per day.
This means that for longer rentals, the final price can increase significantly — simply because the customer chose to collect the vehicle directly from the airport.
This is where many travelers end up unpleasantly surprised. At first, they see what appears to be an attractive low price, but only during the final booking steps do they discover the actual total amount they will have to pay.
The issue is that many customers notice these charges only at the last stage of the reservation or even when collecting the vehicle. By then, they have already selected a car, filled in their personal details, and spent time completing the booking process. That is exactly why such fees often remain unnoticed at the beginning. The initial low price looks appealing, but later various additional charges start appearing.
When comparing rental offers, it is important not to focus only on the first price you see on a website. More importantly, you should check:
whether there is an airport fee;
whether the fee is charged once or per day;
whether it is included in the final price;
and what the actual total cost will be for the entire rental period.
This is why more and more customers are no longer looking simply for the “lowest starting price,” but for transparent conditions and clarity about what is actually included in the rental.
