Driving in Bulgaria as a Foreigner – Everything You Need to Know

For many tourists and foreigners, renting a car in Bulgaria is the most convenient way to travel between airports, cities, resorts, and smaller destinations. It gives you freedom and flexibility that public transport simply cannot offer.
However, before you get behind the wheel, it’s important to understand the local rules, required documents, road taxes, and what to expect during a police check.
The truth is simple: driving in Bulgaria is not difficult — as long as you know the basics.
Which side of the road do you drive on?
In Bulgaria, driving is on the right-hand side of the road, and overtaking is done on the left.
If you’re coming from a country with left-side driving, pay extra attention during your first minutes on the road. The most common mistakes happen when:
• entering roundabouts
• changing lanes
• leaving parking areas
Take it slow at the beginning — you’ll adjust quickly.
Basic driving rules you should know
There are a few key rules in Bulgaria that are strictly enforced:
• Daytime running lights or low beams are mandatory at all times
• Seat belts are required for all passengers
• Child seats are mandatory for children under 150 cm
• Using a phone while driving is prohibited unless you use hands-free
These may seem basic, but fines are real and enforced. Don’t assume rules are the same as in your home country.
Speed limits in Bulgaria
Standard speed limits for cars are:
• 50 km/h in urban areas
• 90 km/h outside urban areas
• 140 km/h on highways
Important: Road signs always override general limits
You’ll often see lower limits in:
• construction zones
• tunnels
• city entrances
Also, while 140 km/h is allowed, it doesn’t mean it’s always safe. Adjust your speed depending on traffic and conditions.
Alcohol and driving
The legal limit is 0.5‰ blood alcohol.
Practical advice: If you’re driving — don’t drink at all.
Police checks are common and completely routine.
Required documents
During a police check, you must present:
• Passport or ID
• Driving licence
• Vehicle documents
If you’re driving a rental car: you must also carry your rental agreement
For EU drivers:
• Your licence is fully valid in Bulgaria
For non-EU drivers:
• An international driving permit may be required
Road tax (vignette) in Bulgaria – how it works
One of the most important things to understand is the electronic vignette (road tax).
For cars up to 3.5 tons, a valid vignette is required when driving on national roads.
Prices (2026):
• 1 day – 8 BGN
• 7 days – 15 BGN
• 1 month – 30 BGN
• 3 months – 58 BGN
• 1 year – 95 BGN
A 1-day vignette is now available, which is very useful for short trips.
When you rent a car from DL Rent:
  • The vignette is already included in the rental price
  • All standard road taxes in Bulgaria are included
This means:
• you don’t need to buy anything extra
• no risk of fines
• no confusion about coverage
With many rental companies, this is NOT guaranteed — always check.
Winter requirements
Between 15 November and 1 March, your vehicle must have:
• winter tyres
or
• tyres with at least 4 mm tread depth
Practical advice: If you’re driving in the mountains — don’t take risks.
Mandatory equipment in the car
Every vehicle in Bulgaria must have:
• Reflective safety vest
• Warning triangle
• First aid kit
• Fire extinguisher
